Scalene Stretch for Desk Workers

Scalene Stretch for Desk Workers

Prolonged computer work can contribute to postural changes such as forward head positioning and rounded shoulders. Over time, muscles around the neck and upper body can become tight from remaining in these positions.

Why Stretch the Scalenes?

The scalene muscles are located along the sides of the neck and attach around the upper ribs.

Workplace Kinetics' stretch-break approach focuses on gently lengthening structures that may become tight during prolonged desk work.

How to Do the Scalene Stretch

  1. Sit upright with your shoulders relaxed.

  2. Place one hand along the upper chest on the side you want to stretch.

  3. Gently extend your head backward.

  4. Turn your head away from the hand.

  5. Stop when you feel a comfortable stretch through the side and front of your neck.

Suggested duration: 3 rounds of 30 seconds on each side.

Keep the movement slow and avoid forcing the neck into position.

Take a Break From the Desk

Even a well-designed workstation doesn't eliminate the need for movement. Regularly changing position and incorporating simple movement breaks can help employees avoid remaining in one posture for hours at a time.

Workplace Kinetics brings employee stretching, ergonomics and workplace wellness education directly to companies throughout Dallas–Fort Worth.
