Sciatic Nerve Glides

Seated Sciatic Nerve Glides for Desk Workers

Sitting for extended periods can contribute to tightness through the hips and legs. Workplace Kinetics uses gentle movement and stretching education to help employees change position throughout the workday.

One movement included in our stretch-break education is a seated sciatic nerve glide.

What Is a Sciatic Nerve Glide?

Unlike a static stretch that holds one position, a nerve glide uses gentle movement.

Workplace Kinetics' stretch guide recommends performing this movement before a seated hamstring stretch.

How to Do a Seated Sciatic Nerve Glide

  1. Sit upright with your knee bent.

  2. Slowly extend one knee with your foot in a neutral position.

  3. Bring your toes toward you.

  4. Point your foot away.

  5. Return to the starting position.

  6. Repeat slowly and gently.

Suggested repetition: 10 repetitions on each side.

The goal is controlled movement, not forcing the leg into a deep stretch.

Follow With a Hamstring Stretch

After completing the nerve glide, extend one leg in front of you while seated. Keep your back relatively flat and gently lean forward toward the extended leg.

Suggested duration: 3 rounds of 30 seconds on each side.

Workplace Kinetics provides on-site employee stretching and movement education for companies throughout Dallas–Fort Worth.
